Ovako Imatra to launch next apprenticeship programme in autumn 2026

The application period for Ovako Imatra’s next apprenticeship programme will run from 22 April to 17 May. Approximately 20 students will be selected for positions in production and mechanical maintenance. The studies will begin on 1 September, 2026.
The programme is part of Ovako Imatra’s preparations for upcoming retirements in the coming years. Apprenticeships support the transfer of knowledge to a new generation.
“Apprenticeship training is an important pathway for us to recruit and develop new talents. At the same time, it offers an opportunity to gain qualifications directly in working life,” says Helena Kumpulainen, HR director at Ovako Imatra.
The programme is carried out in cooperation with Saimaa Vocational College Sampo. The programme starting this autumn will be the third joint implementation. While the content of the training remains largely the same, the qualification structure will be slightly updated. Participants will complete a vocational qualification in process industry, specialising in metal refining.
“We have gained motivated employees through apprenticeships who are committed to their work and develop quickly into multi-skilled professionals. In my view, this is a win-win situation for both the students and us as an employer,” Kumpulainen says.
The students will be employed by Ovako throughout the programme, and learning will mainly take place through practical work tasks supported by workplace instructors. Sampo will guide, monitor and assess the progress of the studies and support the implementation of the training. Recruitment for the programme is carried out in cooperation with Staffpoint.
Apprenticeship information evening
Ovako will host an information event on Wednesday, April 22, where the apprenticeship programme and application process will be presented. Representatives from partner organisations will also attend, including lecturers from Saimaa Vocational College Sampo and representative from Staffpoint, who is responsible for recruitment. In addition, graduates from previous apprenticeship programmes will share their experiences. The event will include a mill tour and will be held in Finnish.
